Whether it's about saving a buck or saving the planet, the fact of the matter is it's only a short time before storage becomes the top consumer of power in your data center. Top industry analysts note half of the world's data centers will be strapped for enough power and cooling to operate their storage equipment by the end of this year.
What are your plans?
We welcome you to share your ideas and ask questions with your peers in the IT community. Although the majority of you don't have goals for reducing energy consumption, most of you have said it is a concern. Let's get talking about how we can help each other!
As an incentive to get you going, we're giving away an LTO-4 tape drive.
By the way, did you know that Tandberg Data offers the LTO drives with the lowest power consumption in the industry? 36% lower than Quantum and 40% lower than HP!1

There are several ways to reduce power. One is to make sure your UPSs are up to date. The newer UPSs have much better power regulation and analysis tools, are much more efficient and often generate less heat than older models. Plus from a data security standpoint, having a newer and better UPS is just good business sense so you have as little down-time and data loss as possible.
Another way is, unless you must have your datacenter well lit at all times for security measures, have the lights and other non-essential power items on a motion activated switch so that only when people are in the DC will the lights be on and using power. Little things like that really do add up.
And, of course, having more and better backup equipment saves power. The quicker you can get your backups done, the sooner your computers can go into power save mode (or shut down completely) until their next use. LTO drives are excellent for speeding up data backup time. |

We are working to implement vPro so that all workstations are shutdown every night. Systems can be brought on automatically in the middle of the night for only the amount of time they need to be, minimizing power consumption. |

To reduce power consumption we are moving to virtual servers. In addtion, to reducing the power used by the systems, we anticpate being able to redirect cooling to other parts of the building. |

It's reliable, it's fast, it's cheap, and it sips power.
What else is there left to say. |

We just bought a Tandberg Data LTO tape drive and I was surprised to see that it uses less power than the other brands. Energy costs are definitely becoming a big deal for us now and every little bit helps.
Thanks. |
